VM suspend/sleep automatically - PIIX4: PMAccessPM got ACPI S1 request

$

Friends,

i am stuck in the situation where VM windows server 2008R2 automatically starts going to Sleep/Suspend mode & i can see on windows event logs as below(snippet 1), however on Power setting sleep option is set to "NEVER". there is no any other logs available on event logs that can tell cause of server sleep/suspend.

Checked ESXi logs & found "PIIX4: PMAccessPM got ACPI S1 request" that also indicates that system is set for some sleep setting. Refer ESXi logs what i can see(Snippet 2).

Do anyone have any idea of this issue?

Snippet 1

The system is entering sleep.

Sleep Reason: Application API

VMWare migration project

$

Hi all,

I have just been handed a VMWare migration project with the below details. I have limited VMWare experience and I still got this project but anyway..

Current setup:

  • There is vSphere A, in which it has 5 ESXi hosts running 5.5 and roughly 50 VMs.
  • This environment has multiple networks with vSwitches.
  • It also has 7 datastores attached to it.
  • Some VMs have volumes assigned to different datastores. For example, OS drive is assigned to datastore A and storage drive is assigned to datastore B.
  • The vCenter and ESXi hosts have 192.168.xxx.xxx addresses.

New setup:

  • Then there is vSphere B, to which 20 VMs from vSphere A needs to migrate. There are 3 ESXi hosts running 5.5.
  • This environment is vanilla, no network or VMs configured on it.
  • It has 2 datastores attached to it, 1 x RAID10 to run the VMs and 1 x RAID 6 for backup and storage repository.
  • The new environment will have 10.20.xxx.xxx addressing.

Both environments are physically sitting in the same building.

The requirements:

  • Migrated VMs must be accessible from 192.168.xxx.xxx addresses.
  • The migration needs to have as little downtime as possible since the VMs are production VMs.
  • There is only one license for VCenter. When the migration is completed, a new vCenter needs to be setup in in the new environment and license from the old vCenter will be used on this one. The old vCenter will be decommissioned.

I am planning to add the new ESXi hosts and datastores to the current vCenter. Then migrate the VMs the new ESXi hosts and datastores via the current vCenter. Change the addressing of those migrated and do a trial run.

So what is the best way to tackle this? Best practice? How would I migrate VMs that have different volumes assigned to different datastores?

Thanks.

Re: Network goes down because of DLR VM vMotion

I faced similar kind of issue , but not exactly the same.

In my scenario, i had a cluster with 2 hosts.

Host 1 - Active DLR Control VM

Host 2 - Standby DLR Control

Anti Affinity Rule - Enabled.

I did the vMotion of the DLR control VM with Anti Affinity rule enabled to the other host.

vMotion was successful, but the DRS kicked in due to Anti Affinity rule & moved the DLR to the original host.

During this time, i faced network disruption. Split brain scenario happened which affected by network.

Because of split brain scenario, my network was interrupted.

Can you check from the logs whether split brain scenario had occurred or not in your environment ?

You can not find the virtual adapter of vmnet1 and vmnet8 from "Device Manger -- Network" after workstation installation? If so, would you please upload the installer log files? It locates in %tmp% folder, and we are interested in all vm*.log, thanks

Would you please try to re-install the Workstation and check if you can find the virtual adapter of vmnet1 and vmnet8 from "Device Manger -- Network" after workstation installation? If not, would you please upload the installer log files? It locates in %tmp% folder, and we are interested in all vm*.log, thanks

Re: Newly created array not appearing in ESXi

Hi Chaps!

Sorry for bringing up an old thread, but I have the same issue.

HP DL380G7 ESXi HPE 6.0u3. If I create an array on the running host with ssacli it won't show up until I reboot the host. This is somewhat frustrating right now, as I'd like to test different raid levels with different amount of disks added to the array, while with some production VM's running on another controller in the machine. Is there a solution NOT TO reboot the host after creating a new array?

It's a P411 with an MSA60. But back in time I've experienced the same issue with the integrated P410i and the local drives - it's just that now I can't tolerate it anymore:D

Just to add some "fun" to the story, sometimes, if the stars are right, I can delete an array and recreate another one - even with a different raid level, and it would show up - most of the times not though.

I've done all the obvious, like rescanning the hba and so.

Cheers

Since the issue appears to be APFS + FileVault only, I wonder if a potential workaround might be:

1. Create a sparse bundle disk image with disk manager, and format it as HFS+

2. Move the VM files in this disk image and run from there

Assuming the issue is somewhere on Vmware’s side, this might trick it into working like it should.

I’ll try this when I get a chance - but if someone beats me to it, let us know if it helps!

I found some large snapshots that don't show up in the client.  They are all consolidated, but maintenance mode <alt+F1> still does not work right.   The terminal window immediately pops up, but I get no login prompt nor can I type in the terminal window.  When I do <alt+F2>, it closes the terminal window as it should.  The other servers do not have that problem.

Re: General VMs briefly lose iSCSI storage connection question?

Thank you for that.  I figured that was a no brainer as well.  Of course you gracefully power off VMs so not to yank their network storage connections out from under them.  Who know what could happen, especially with database VMs, etc.

I am considering only power off VMs.  I would leave hosts and storage running.  Network storage may initiate a controller failover, but prepared to live with that.  Considering powering off VMs, powering off switch, moving its power cord, power back on switch, and then powering on VMs once network storage is restored.

Sound ok?

VMFS 6 - Maximum PTR blocks (dynamic) ?

I tried to search for maximum values but can't find one for PTR blocks value in VMFS 6

Any thoughts?

Considering powering off VMs, powering off switch, moving its power cord, power back on switch, and then powering on VMs once network storage is restored.

In your situation, that's really all you can do since you don't have another path to storage. There's no need to shutdown ESXi hosts or storage as it should recover after the switch comes back up.

The statement: "Each host should contain a minimum of 32 GB of memory to accommodate for the maximum number of 5 disk groups and maximum number of 7 capacity devices per disk group." pertains to a fully populated configuration per host (5 disk groups with 1 cache & 7 capacity devices each." (updated to add closing quotation mark)

The amount of RAM required is completely dependent on the type of hardware (Hybrid or All Flash), how many disk groups, and the size of the cache device(s) being used.

In short, 32GB of RAM is NOT a minimum requirement, unless using 5 disk groups with 7 capacity devices each.

Blank/Black Screen Console

Hi all,

I have a CentOS guest and get a blank/black screen when opening its console.  Has anyone seen this and know why this happens?  I know the guest is online and works as I can SSH into it.  I have a screenshot of what I'm talking about.

Client version 1.21.0

ESXi version 6.5.0

ESXi build 5959303

I opened VMWare Fusion for the first time in months last night just before bed, upgraded it, and fell asleep before doing anything else. This morning I opened my laptop at work and saw all the error messages from every open program on my computer complaining about permissions issues, then crashing. I'm glad I was able to find this thread, because I was worried about having been hit with ransomware for a few hours this morning. I chown'd my home directory back, but obviously this is going to cause some subtle problems down the line that I can't detect yet. The VMWare Fusion app is corrupted now, and all other apps are fine, so I'm pretty confident the upgrade was the culprit.

High Sierra 10.13.2 beta 17C85a

(sorry I don't know the previous version of VMWare Fusion that I was running)

Let me know how I can help.

Assign 2 cores, not 3!

Did you also decrease the RAM?

Did you install the latest VMware Tools?
